What does a one-way campervan trip cost?
If you’re planning a South Island road trip, chances are you’ve looked at one-way campervan hire, picking up in Christchurch and ending your trip and dropping off in Queenstown (or the other way around}.
We see this question come up a lot, and it’s easy to understand why. One-way hires are popular because they let you see more of the South Island without backtracking. You keep the trip moving forward, avoid repeating long drives.
If you’re short on time, or just don’t love the idea of retracing your steps, they’re a really solid option. That said, one-way hires often come with an extra fee. So what’s that actually paying for?
When you end your campervan hire in a different city, we need to get it back to Christchurch. The cost of relocating a campervan typically involves:
Fuel
Road User Charges (RUC)
Vehicle wear and tear
A flight for the driver
A full day of someone’s time
When you add it all up, the numbers look like this:
Item | Approximate cost |
Fuel (Diesel) | $120 |
Road User Charges (RUC) | $46 |
Flight | $100-$150 |
Campervan wear and tear | $62 |
Time | $200-$300 |
Total | Around $400-600 NZD |
That said, when we hire out our campervans, we rarely charge out the full hire amount, more often that not we're happy to offer a relocation option at a lower price as part of the overall hire package. That's one of the beauties of hiring direct from owners via platforms like Camplify, you can negotiate extras like this.

Breaking Down the Relocation Costs
To get into the details further, let's break it down, using a real-world example. based on a Mercedes Sprinter campervan being driven one way from C hristchurch.
Fuel
The driving distance between Queenstown and Christchurch is roughly 475 km, depending on the route.
A fully loaded Sprinter campervan generally uses around 12 litres per 100 km.
That means:
Fuel used: about 57 litres of diesel
Typical NZ diesel price: around $1.95 per litre
Estimated diesel cost: roughly $120
Road User Charges (RUC)
Diesel vehicles in New Zealand don’t pay fuel tax at the pump. Instead, they pay Road User Charges, which are charged per kilometre travelled.
At current rates, light diesel vehicles pay about $76 per 1,000 km. Usually charged out at $96 by most hire companies (to cover admin), For a 475 km relocation drive:
Estimated RUC cost: about $46
Flight: Christchurch to Queenstown
Before the van can be driven back, someone has to get to Queenstown to collect it.
A one-way flight from Christchurch to Queenstown usually costs around $150.
Estimated flight cost: about $150
Vehicle wear and tear
Things like:
Servicing and repairs
Tyres
Brakes and consumables
For a large campervan like a Sprinter, we allow $0.13 per kilometre
Wear and tear cost: about $65
Time: a full day’s work
Relocating a campervan isn’t just a casual road trip. Once you factor everything in, it’s usually a full working day. That includes:
Vehicle checks before departure
Six-plus hours of driving
Refuelling
Drop-off and handover prep
A full day of someone’s time is at least $300.
Is a one-way fee worth it?
In many cases, yes.
If paying a one-way fee saves you several days of driving, extra fuel, campsite fees, and the hassle of backtracking, it can be good value. You end up with a cleaner route, better flow, and a more relaxed trip overall.
For us, the important thing is transparency. One-way fees aren’t arbitrary, they reflect very real costs behind the scenes.
If you’re weighing up your South Island route and trying to decide whether a one-way hire makes sense, I hope this gives you a clearer picture of what’s involved.
