Crown Range Summit
About the campsite:
High above the Queenstown basin, Crown Range Summit offers the highest freedom camping location in New Zealand and delivers some of the most dramatic alpine views available from a roadside stop. Sitting at over one thousand metres elevation, this exposed location attracts campervan travellers who chase sunrise scenery and mountain landscapes.
The camping area is simple and open, with limited shelter and space for self contained campervans to park near the summit viewpoint. Facilities are not provided, so visitors must arrive fully prepared. The exposed environment makes this site best suited to experienced travellers who understand alpine weather conditions.
The surrounding scenery is the main attraction. Views stretch across valleys, peaks and distant lakes, with sunrise offering particularly strong colour and light. Photography opportunities are exceptional, especially during clear weather when visibility is at its best.
For campervan travellers, Crown Range Summit works best as a short overnight stay focused on scenery rather than comfort. Cold temperatures and strong winds are common, so preparation is essential. Arriving before sunset allows travellers to assess conditions and select sheltered parking positions.
Crown Range Summit delivers one of the most visually impressive overnight stops in the South Island and rewards prepared campervan travellers with unforgettable mountain scenery.
