Kohaihai
About the campsite:
At the northern edge of the West Coast, Kohaihai Campsite delivers a striking coastal and rainforest camping experience at the western end of the Heaphy Track. Surrounded by nikau palms and backed by forested hills, the setting feels almost tropical by South Island standards.
The campsite layout is open and grassy, allowing campervans to park comfortably near forest edges and river corridors. Facilities are simple and reflect DOC standard camping style.
The surrounding area offers direct access to river swimming holes, beach walks and the Heaphy Track trailhead. The Tasman Sea creates powerful coastal scenery, while palm forest provides shade and shelter.
For campervan travellers, Kohaihai works well as a destination stop rather than a transit camp. Arriving during daylight allows travellers to explore the river mouth and coastal environment safely.
Kohaihai delivers a rare combination of rainforest, river and ocean scenery that adds strong contrast to West Coast campervan itineraries.
