Lake Poaka

About the campsite:

Tucked beside the Mackenzie Basin landscape near Lake Tekapo, Lake Poaka offers a rare freedom camping opportunity that welcomes both self contained vehicles and traditional tent campers. The quiet lakeside setting and wide open skies create a peaceful atmosphere that feels far removed from the busy Tekapo township, making it attractive to travellers who value space and simplicity.

The camping area is informal and lightly developed, with flat grassy ground that allows campervans and motorhomes to park comfortably alongside tents and smaller vehicles. As a freedom camping site, facilities are not provided, so visitors should arrive prepared with water, waste systems and power solutions where required. The open layout allows campers to spread out and enjoy privacy, especially outside peak travel periods.

The surrounding environment is ideal for low key outdoor activities. Lake Poaka offers calm freshwater access for swimming and paddleboarding, while open basin landscapes provide uninterrupted views of surrounding hills and skies. Stargazing is a major highlight, with minimal light pollution allowing clear night sky visibility and strong Milky Way viewing opportunities.

For campervan travellers, Lake Poaka works well as an overnight base near Tekapo without the cost and crowds of town camping. Arriving before sunset allows travellers to secure good lake facing positions and enjoy evening light conditions. Supplies should be purchased in Tekapo prior to arrival.

Lake Poaka delivers relaxed lakeside camping with flexibility rarely found in the Mackenzie region, offering a valuable alternative for travellers seeking quiet and open space.
