Lake Wardell
About the campsite:
Positioned near the Mackenzie hydro canal system, Lake Wardell offers a sheltered and practical freedom camping stop between Tekapo and Wanaka. The grassy lakeside environment provides calm conditions and easy vehicle access, making it popular with travellers and fishing enthusiasts alike.
The camping area is flat and informal, allowing campervans and motorhomes to park comfortably with space to set up outdoor living areas. Facilities are not provided, so travellers must arrive self contained and prepared.
Fishing is a major drawcard here, with canal trout attracting anglers from across the region. The calm water environment also suits relaxed lakeside walks and quiet evening relaxation. The sheltered positioning offers protection from strong Mackenzie Basin winds.
For campervan travellers, Lake Wardell works well as a transit stop or overnight break on longer alpine driving days. Arriving during daylight allows easier site positioning and safer access near the water.
Lake Wardell delivers convenience, shelter and outdoor recreation value that fits naturally into Mackenzie Basin campervan routes.
