Lindis Pass Transit

About the campsite:

High in the tussock covered alpine corridor between Otago and Canterbury, Lindis Pass Transit Area offers simple high altitude freedom camping surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes. The exposed environment creates a strong sense of scale and remoteness.

The camping area is basic and undeveloped, with flat gravel surfaces suitable for self contained campervans. There are no facilities provided, so travellers must arrive fully prepared for overnight stays and changing weather conditions.

The surrounding scenery offers wide open views across alpine basins and rolling hills. Night skies are exceptional due to minimal light pollution, making this one of the best roadside stargazing locations in the South Island.

For campervan travellers, Lindis Pass Transit works best as a short overnight stop focused on scenery and astronomy rather than comfort. Arriving before dark allows safer positioning and orientation.

Lindis Pass Transit offers raw alpine camping that delivers atmosphere and sky focused experiences unmatched by lower altitude sites.
