Maitai Valley

About the campsite:

Hidden within native forest just minutes from central Nelson, Maitai Valley Holiday Park offers a rare combination of wilderness atmosphere and urban convenience. The valley setting creates a cool, shaded environment surrounded by steep green hills, flowing river water and dense bush, making it a favourite for campervan travellers who want natural immersion without committing to remote backcountry travel.

The park layout follows the contours of the valley floor, with sheltered sites positioned among trees and alongside the Maitai River. Campervans and motorhomes can park comfortably with natural separation between sites, creating privacy and a relaxed camping atmosphere. Facilities are well maintained and include powered sites, shared kitchens, clean amenities and laundry services. The forest canopy provides excellent shade in summer and wind protection year round.

Outdoor recreation is the main attraction here. Mountain bike trails start directly from the park and connect into the extensive Maitai trail network, offering riding options for all skill levels. Swimming holes along the river provide refreshing dips on warm days, while walking tracks allow easy access to waterfalls and forest viewpoints. Nelson city remains only a short drive away, making cafés, supermarkets and waterfront attractions easily accessible.

For campervan travellers, Maitai Valley works well as a multi night base. Its proximity to the Abel Tasman region, Nelson Lakes and Tasman Bay allows flexible day trips without relocating camp. Arriving during daylight helps with site selection and orientation within the forested layout.

Maitai Valley Holiday Park delivers one of the best balance points between wilderness camping and city convenience in the upper South Island, making it a strong anchor location for extended Nelson region travel.
