Makarora Country Cafe

About the campsite:

Located beside the main highway between Wanaka and the West Coast, Makarora Country Cafe Campground provides a sheltered and practical overnight base in a region known for unpredictable alpine weather. Surrounded by mountain peaks and river flats, the setting offers both scenery and protection, making it a popular choice for campervan travellers navigating the Haast Pass corridor.

The campground layout offers flat, accessible parking areas suitable for campervans and motorhomes of various sizes. Compared to nearby DOC sites, this private campground provides improved shelter and upgraded facilities including powered sites, hot showers and indoor amenities. The attached café adds major convenience, offering meals, coffee and supplies without needing to move your vehicle.

The surrounding environment includes access to river walks, alpine viewpoints and scenic driving routes toward Mount Aspiring National Park. The nearby Makarora Valley provides hiking options and photographic scenery, while the open valley floor allows relaxed outdoor time when weather conditions improve.

For campervan travellers, this site works exceptionally well as a weather buffer stop. During heavy rain events common on the West Coast side of the pass, having solid shelter and warm facilities becomes especially valuable. Arriving before evening improves site choice and café access.

Makarora Country Cafe Campground combines comfort, location and reliability, making it a smart logistical stop on South Island alpine crossing routes.
