Moawhitu
About the campsite:
Accessible only by barge from French Pass, Moawhitu Campsite delivers one of the most remote camping experiences available in the Marlborough Sounds. The isolated harbour setting and surrounding native forest create an off grid environment that feels completely disconnected from modern infrastructure.
The campsite layout is simple and lightly developed, with space for campervans to park near sheltered water and forest edges. Facilities are minimal and designed for low impact camping only, making this site suitable for fully self sufficient travellers.
The surrounding area offers kayaking, swimming and wildlife spotting opportunities in calm harbour waters. Walking tracks and forest exploration allow visitors to experience native bush without crowds or noise pollution.
For campervan travellers, Moawhitu requires careful planning. Barge bookings, weather conditions and supply preparation are essential. Arriving in daylight allows safer unloading and site positioning.
Moawhitu delivers true isolation and wilderness immersion that few South Island locations can replicate.
