Okains Bay Camping

About the campsite:

Tucked behind a wide sandy bay on Banks Peninsula, Okains Bay Camping Ground represents classic New Zealand summer camping culture. The sheltered beach setting, family friendly atmosphere and strong local heritage make this one of the most beloved council campgrounds in the South Island.

The campground layout is expansive and relaxed, with grassy areas suitable for campervans, motorhomes and traditional tent camping. Facilities are simple but well maintained, supporting extended family stays and social holiday environments. The open design encourages outdoor living and relaxed campsite interaction.

The surrounding area offers excellent swimming conditions thanks to the wide, gently sloping beach. Coastal walking routes, rock pools and fishing spots provide daily outdoor activities. The nearby Okains Bay Museum adds cultural interest, showcasing regional history and early settlement artefacts.

For campervan travellers, Okains Bay works particularly well as a multi night base. Staying longer allows visitors to fully embrace the slow pace and seaside lifestyle. Arriving earlier in the day improves site selection and beach proximity.

Okains Bay Camping Ground delivers authentic Kiwi beach camping with community spirit and coastal charm that remains increasingly rare.
