Raspberry Flat
About the campsite:
Hidden deep within Mount Aspiring National Park, Raspberry Flat offers one of the most remote and visually dramatic camping experiences accessible by vehicle in the South Island. This freedom camping location sits at the gateway to the Rob Roy Glacier track and attracts adventurous campervan travellers who prioritise wilderness immersion and alpine scenery.
The camping area is open and rugged, set within a broad alpine valley surrounded by steep mountain walls. Flat gravel and grass areas allow parking for self contained campervans, although access conditions can change depending on weather and river crossings. Facilities are not provided, reinforcing the off grid nature of the location.
The surrounding environment is extraordinary. Rob Roy Glacier dominates the upper valley, with hanging ice fields and waterfalls visible from walking tracks. Alpine rivers, braided stream crossings and wild vegetation create a landscape shaped entirely by natural forces. Wildlife sightings and constant changes in weather patterns add to the sense of isolation and adventure.
For campervan travellers, Raspberry Flat requires careful preparation. Road conditions must be checked before arrival, and four wheel drive capability may be necessary depending on seasonal water levels. Arriving in daylight is essential to safely navigate access routes and identify suitable parking areas. Carrying emergency supplies is strongly recommended.
Raspberry Flat delivers true wilderness camping that rewards preparation with unforgettable alpine scenery and deep immersion into New Zealand high country environments.
