Tumu Toka Curio Bay
About the campsite:
Located on a dramatic headland between two very different coastal environments, Tumu Toka Curio Bay Holiday Park offers one of the most biologically and visually unique camping experiences in the South Island. This site sits between fossil forests on one side and active surf breaks on the other, creating a rare combination of geological history and modern marine life encounters.
The park layout provides sheltered grassy sites suitable for campervans and motorhomes, with modern amenities supporting comfortable multi night stays. Facilities include clean bathrooms, shared kitchens and well maintained communal areas. The open coastal positioning allows easy access to headland viewpoints and shoreline walking routes.
The surrounding environment defines the Curio Bay experience. One side of the headland features 180 million year old fossilised trees preserved in coastal rock platforms, while the opposite bay offers surf breaks and regular dolphin sightings. Rare yellow eyed penguins often return to shore in the evenings, creating unforgettable wildlife viewing opportunities. Sunrise and sunset light transforms the coastline into one of the most photographed locations in the Catlins.
For campervan travellers, Tumu Toka works best as a destination base. Staying multiple nights allows visitors to experience different tidal conditions, wildlife activity cycles and lighting changes across the bays. Arriving earlier improves access to premium view sites.
Tumu Toka Curio Bay delivers one of the richest coastal camping environments in New Zealand, combining history, wildlife and dramatic scenery.
