Twelve Mile Delta
About the campsite:
Stretching along the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Twelve Mile Delta is one of the largest and most scenic DOC campgrounds near Queenstown. Famous as a filming location for Ithilien in Lord of the Rings, this expansive site attracts campervan travellers who want lake access, forest shade and direct trail connectivity without paying resort prices.
The campsite layout is extensive, offering multiple parking zones across forested and lakeside areas. Campervans can park close to the water or beneath tree cover depending on preference. Facilities are DOC standard with toilets and basic amenities that support extended stays.
The surrounding environment offers swimming beaches, walking tracks and cycling routes that connect directly into Queenstown trail networks. Lake access allows kayaking and paddleboarding, while nearby forest paths provide shaded walking options. Mountain views across the lake create a constant scenic backdrop.
For campervan travellers, Twelve Mile Delta works well as both overnight stop and multi night base. It offers easy access to Queenstown attractions while remaining far quieter than urban parks. Arriving earlier in the day improves site selection.
Twelve Mile Delta delivers scale, scenery and recreation access that define Southern Lakes camping.
